Windows Phone 7.8 Is Ready To Be Released

Microsoft made it clear that they won’t be giving a Windows Phone 8 update to our current firmware Windows Phone 7.5. The reason why an update for our devices is impossible, simply because the current Windows Phone models doesn’t meet the hardware requirements. That means that we are stuck with this mobile OS forever. Nokia and Samsung promised an update to be hitting this early Q1 of 2013. Even the entry level Nokia Lumia 610 will be getting an update soon so one could still enjoy the newly designed home screen with adjustable size of application tiles. This is one of the dominant features of the future OS. Some Lumia 800 users already got the update and some developers are force flashing their devices with Navifirm, an application to download Nokia Firmware.

As compared to Google Play, the Windows marketplace still has limited number of applications to date. However, developers are trying to bring iOs and android apps to our Windows Phone. An example of which is viber. Before, viber in WP couldn’t make calls over 3G. Another thing that we are expecting in this update is improved browsing capability. We all know that the built-in Internet Explorer 9 doesn’t support flash and still there has no Chrome browser or Firefox available in the {marketplace}. Streaming the latest hits on YouTube is still amazingly fast and stable. We even made a test by playing online games like PartyPoker.com. We even tried downloading the software but PartyPoker’s file extension is .exe which is not the same as the desktop Windows. The only way we could enjoy the game is through the instant play feature. With the limited screen of 3.7 inches in Lumia 610, the pinch to zoom function really helped for great viewing angles while playing poker. Given the low benchmark ratings as an entry level phone, minimal to zero lags are experienced. However, after downloading the PartyPoker tutorial in pdf version, we have noticed that the browser doesn’t support viewing of online documents. You need a third party acrobat reader to do that. Will this be improved after updating to Windows 7.8?

Many users are looking forward to having more applications similar to other mobile platforms such as the very trendy {Instagram}. Also, there are limited third-party browsing and office applications. Yeah, we love the built in Microsoft Office mobile. However, there are still many restrictions in its editing capability.

The only way to know if you will be getting an update is to regularly connect your mobile phone to Zune. Zune is the only way to transfer stuff to your smartphone and check for the latest software update that will improve the mobile productivity. You also need to turn on the data connectivity to be able to be notified once your mobile received the rollout. Any moment now, Microsoft should be releasing WP 7.8 since it is already early 1st quarter of 2013 as promised. We should see if what other features they will include other than the colorful live tiles in the home screen.

Meet Lumia 820 – Detailed Review

The most versatile Lumia – as Nokia calls one of its latest smartphones announced yesterday at Nokia World 2012 event, along with the Lumia 920, is one of the world’s first smartphone to be powered with Windows Phone 8. With Carl Zeiss lens, 4.3” ClearBlack display and range of new colourful and wireless charging shells, Lumia 820 should be fairly regarded as the highly augmented version of its predecessor – Lumia 800

Similarly to Lumia 920, Lumia 820 features Wireless Charging, allowing you to choose a shell for your smartphone and never ever plug it in again- as once the shell is in place, you’ll need to just rest the phone on a charging plate, or a  the Charging Pillow by Fatboy – and the battery will boost.

The Lumia 820 comes with full versions of Microsoft Office and Outlook, enabling you to carry the whole office with you. For the rest of the detailed specs and features of Nokia Lumia 820, check the table provided below.

Only Windows Phone 8 Will Get In-app Purchasing

In-app purchasing is a cool thing and iPhone owners have been enjoying this feature for quite a while. It has become known that in-app purchasing will be coming to Windows Phone too, but only Windows Phone 8 will get it. In-app purchasing will be tied to the upcoming Wallet hub. Along with the in-app purchases, the hub will use for NFC payments. This information is not very good for current Windows Phone 7 owners. Looking at things pragmatically, we can think that the only major feature in the 7.8 update will be the new start screen.

Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak is Switching to Nokia Lumia 900

Wow, actually a big big wow. Let's see how the story began.

"Breakfast to waste time awaiting opening of AT&T to see if Lumia 900 available"

It's amazing how a Tweet as simple as this can make so much buzz. You may invest thousands of dollars in advertising without getting a fraction of a result as this Tweet has made. Well, when an all around geek guy like Steve Wozniak posts a message that he's waiting opening of AT&T to see if Lumia 900 is available, that's a killer story.

If "the Woz" actually gets one of these amazing Windows Phone devices is another story but a mere fact of his considering to get one is nice.

Hopefully, more and more highly respected people will switch to Windows Phone. That shall boost the platform as it gains momentum.

SkyManager for Windows Phone 7

From my non-scientific observation, very often, third party apps for various online services (social networks, photo sharing, video, etc) are better than official apps from the owners of the service. Even though there is a pretty nice app for SkyDrive from Microsoft, folks at JDB Pocketware have done a great job and developed a decent SkyDrive client called SkyManager (what else).

The app is really nice in the true spirit of the Metro UI. However, in terms of functionality, it excels over the official app. Let's quickly look at some of the most useful feature of SkyManager:

  • The app allows you to work with multiple items like uploading multiple files, moving/deleting multiple files/folders and so on.
  • You can open/edit office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and PDF files.
  • Pin to Start any folder or file.
  • Browse SkyDrive shared folders.
  • Resize photos automatically before uploading them.
  • Cropping photos before uploading them.
Well, this list is not exhaustive. We highly recommend SkyDrive. The app is commercial, however as you would expect a Lite version is also available (though with limitations).

Anyway, it's always nice to see an alternative coming. If you need more options than the official SkyDrive app, choose SkyManager. If you'd rather stick with a free one, choose the official SkyDrive app. The choice is yours.

Angry Birds Space Not Coming To Windows Phones

According to recent report from Bloomberg, The new “Angry Birds Space” edition of the world’s most popular mobile-phone game won’t appear in Windows Phone marketplace due to the slow demand. Despite being No. 1 app in the Windows Phone app store, guys at Rovio still think that completely rewriting the application is not worth, comparing to huge undertaking required to support it. That’s exactly what Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer of Rovio Entertainment, said in an interview.

“Rovio has no plans to release “Angry Birds Space” on the Windows Phone platform” - he added.

Rovio is based in the same Espoo, Finland, office park as Nokia and the local Microsoft office. However, the Space addition of the game is available for only Windows personal computers as well as Apple’s iPhone, iPad and Mac computers and android based smartphones as well.

“If you look at activations, Apple’s iOS and Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone it’s a lot of work to technically support it.” - Vesterbacka said.

The absence of Angry Birds in Windows Phone app store may make is quite difficult for Nokia to attract gaming-oriented users, especially teenagers. However Nokia Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop is banking on Windows Phone devices and will introduce smartphones next in China, where “Angry Birds” took off last year. On the other hand,  Peter Vesterbacka announced that Rovio is planning to launch several new editions of Angry Birds till the end of the year, so all we have left to do is to hope that at least the new ones will support smartphones running Microsoft’s mobile platform.
